Common Dermatology Procedures

Punch Biopsy:

A punch biopsy procedure is used to take a small, circular sample of skin for diagnosis. This is often done to investigate rashes, moles, or other skin changes.

  • Local anesthetic is injected to numb the area.
  • A tiny, tube-like blade is used to remove a skin sample.
  • The area may be closed with stitches or left to heal naturally, depending on size.

Shave Biopsy:

A shave biopsy is typically used to remove raised growths or to sample the top layers of a skin lesion.

  • After numbing the skin, a thin blade is used to shave off the surface of the lesion.
  • No stitches are usually needed.
  • The site heals with a flat scar or small mark.

Excisions:

An excision is a slightly larger procedure where the goal is to completely remove a lesion, mole, or suspicious spot, however the completion is determined by the histology results.

  • The skin is numbed with local anesthetic.
  • The entire lesion, along with a small margin of surrounding skin, is carefully removed.
  • Stitches are placed to close the site, and aftercare instructions will be provided.
