Applying sunscreen might seem like a straightforward task, but many people don’t use it as effectively as they should. Even the best sunscreen won’t provide proper protection if it’s applied insufficiently. At Medi Derm, we often see patients with preventable sun damage, so we’re passionate about helping people get the basics right and make a significant difference to their skin’s long-term health. If you’re going on holiday soon or simply want to prepare for summer, learn how to apply sunscreen correctly with our simple guide.

Use Enough

One of the most common mistakes is not using enough sunscreen. As a general guide, adults should be applying around 6-8 teaspoons of sunscreen to cover their entire body. Using too little reduces the level of protection significantly, even if you’re using SPF 50.

When To Apply

Sunscreen should be applied 15–30 minutes before sun exposure. This allows it to properly bind to the skin and start working effectively. Make sure to reapply after two hours, or sooner if you’ve been sweating or swimming. Even ‘water resistant’ formulas can wane in effectiveness over time.

Selecting Your Sunscreen

For daily use, select a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. If you have sensitive skin, mineral formulas containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are often better tolerated. Make an appointment with Medi Derm if you are unsure about the best sunscreen for you we can help recommend products suited to your skin type and any underlying skin conditions.

Don’t Miss Key Areas

When applying your sunscreen, it’s easy to overlook certain parts of the body. Make sure to cover commonly missed areas such as:

  • Ears
  • Back of the neck
  • Tops of the feet
  • Hands and fingers
  • Hairline and scalp (if exposed)

Lip balm with SPF is also important, as lips are particularly vulnerable to sun damage.

Layer Your Sun Protection

Sunscreen works best when combined with other protective measures. Wearing hats, sunglasses, and protective clothing, and seeking shade during peak hours (10am–4pm), will give your skin more complete protection.

Stay Safe In The Sun

Correct sunscreen application is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect your skin from premature ageing and reduce the risk of skin cancer. By learning how to apply sunscreen correctly, you can protect your skin and save yourself facing issues later on.
