Protecting your baby’s delicate skin from the sun is one of the most important concerns for parents. Infant skin is thinner, more sensitive, and more vulnerable to UV damage than adult skin, making proper sun protection essential from the very beginning. But when is it safe for infants to start wearing sunscreen, and how can you best protect your child from the sun?
When Can Infants Start Wearing Sunscreen?
Here at Medi Derm, we recommend avoiding sunscreen for babies under 6 months of age unless absolutely necessary.
Why?
- Infant skin is more permeable, meaning it can absorb chemicals more easily.
- Sunscreens, especially those with chemical filters, may cause irritation or allergic reactions.
- At this stage, sun protection should rely on physical barriers rather than topical products.
Sun Protection for Babies Under 6 Months
For younger infants, sunscreen should not be the first line of defense. Instead, focus on:
1. Shade
Keep babies out of direct sunlight, especially between 10am and 4pm, when UV radiation is strongest. We recommend using canopies for pushchairs, umbrellas and shade from trees or buildings.
2. Protective Clothing
Dressing infants in lightweight, long-sleeved clothing, wide-brimmed hats that shade the face, neck, and ears, and UV-protective fabrics (UPF-rated clothing) are going to provide much better protection for their sensitive skin.
3. Limit Exposure Time
Even indirect sun exposure adds up. Keep outdoor time brief and monitor for signs of overheating.
Choosing Sunscreen for Babies Over 6 Months
Once your baby reaches 6 months, sunscreen becomes an important part of their sun protection routine.
When choosing sunscreen for your baby, look for a gentle, broad-spectrum formula with SPF 30 or higher. Mineral-based options with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are usually the safest choice for sensitive skin, especially when they’re fragrance-free and hypoallergenic. It’s best to steer clear of sunscreens with oxybenzone or other harsh chemical filters, as well as those containing alcohol, added fragrances, or dyes, which can irritate delicate skin.
If your child has particularly sensitive or eczema-prone skin, our dermatologists can recommend suitable medical-grade products tailored to their needs.
Applying Sunscreen To Infants
Proper application is just as important as choosing the right product.
- Apply sunscreen 15–30 minutes before sun exposure
- Use a generous amount and cover all exposed areas
- Reapply every 2 hours, or more frequently if sweating or after water exposure
- Don’t forget commonly missed areas: ears, tops of feet, and back of the neck
Additional ways you can keep your baby safe in the sun include keeping them well hydrated, using sunglasses, and planning activities when UV levels are lower.
Recognising Sunburn in Babies
Signs of sunburn in infants may include:
- Redness or warmth of the skin
- Fussiness or irritability
- Mild swelling
If a baby under 1 year develops sunburn, especially with blistering or fever, seek medical advice immediately.
